America’s Dangerous Bargain With Turkey – The New York Times

“Shortly after granting access to the base, Turkey’s president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, launched a wave of airstrikes on Kurdish targets, reigniting a conflict that had been on the road to resolution. To make matters worse, Turkey has struck hard at Syrian Kurds who have, until now, been America’s most reliable ally in fighting the Islamic State, often called ISIS, in northern Syria.PhotoA demonstration against the Kurdistan Workers’ Party on August 16 in Istanbul. Based on his increasing suppression of secular activities within Turkey and his determination to further Sunni causes at the expense of non-believers, Mr Erdogan aspires to be the Amir al-Mu’minin of the Sunni world. He is not a friend of America or sympathetic to western liberalism.

His vendetta against the Kurds goes well beyond their desire for independence. It is more likely rooted in their military success against the radical Sunni terrorists who have been funded by Saudi and other Sunni Wahhabis. The more successful the Kurds are defeating Sunnis, the more of an example they are to other “non-believers” in the region; eg, an encouragement to resist Sunni theocracy.

I doubt seriously that Turkish officials “crave” the approval of their Washington counterparts. There is no evidence whatsoever of this desire on their part.

There is much evidence that Turkish officials, Mr Erdogan in the vanguard, “crave” the approval of their counterparts in Saudi Arabia. The Saudis have poured financial backing into Mr Erdogan’s Justice and Development Party for more than a decade which has enabled Mr Erdogan to compromise Turkish elections and introduce aspects of Sharia law into Turkish life.

Mr Erdogan is an unapologetic theocrat committed to turning Turkey into another Saudi Arabia. Mustafa Kemal Ataturk must be spinning in his grave.
